Archaeology vs. Surfacing
Monday, January 17th, 2011 04:57 amI started a LiveJournal in 2004, mostly in response to a couple of old friends who were posting there about shared college experiences. It became a mutual project for a while, a way to clear out the cobwebs and make some sense of our tangled past. I named that journal Archaeology, because that’s exactly what it was then: digging up artifacts and putting them in historical context. From that beginning, I branched out into the rest of my history, using the journal as a place to figure myself out from the roots up, as well as dealing with current day-to-day events.
I’m still working on that process, on LJ and in paper journals (which are a lifelong fixture for me), but I’m feeling the need lately to be less focused on the private filing cabinet of my life, and less guarded with my reflections. This journal is called Surfacing. I’m sure I’ll still be mining the past plenty here, but with the goal of moving it forward and doing something with it (even if only to get some good writing out of it). I’m ready to emerge.
